Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.38

This is the 90th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another blissful article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.38.  Silver and Black were in a tight battle on Monday night with Black trying to avoid having back-to-back losses for the first time in the Tactical 88 era.  Black brought a short roster with only 6 skaters, but to combat that issue, they brought in their ace goalie, Kilt Thespian.  That and their secret weapon turned out to be enough to hold off Silver and win by a score of 8 - 7 (box score had 8 - 6 but that was due to their secret weapon).  The head of BPHL officiating disallowed the 666th goal of his career against the Silver team alone, which at the time would have pulled Silver to within a single goal, late in the third period.  Clearly deflated by the impossible call, Silver let down their guard for a moment and allowed Black to score their 8th goal, putting the game on ice.

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF (and Faceoff Chain) were awarded to Natty Daddy again because he is the only player Hockey News! can confirm scored at least one goal after being granted access to the dressing room shortly after the coach addressed the team.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.37

This is the 89th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another blasted article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.37.  Silver and Teal finished up the second of a home and home last Thursday night.  Silver held on for the victory 6 - 4.  This keeps Silver undefeated and untied against the Teal squad.  Then later in the evening, a few Silver players banded with Rusty Red to defeat the Black team by a score of 5 - 4.  The Red netminder was phenomenal against the potent Black squad, but he gave credit to the team in front of him saying, "It was all a product of the system we stuck with and that allowed me to see a variety of shots that were not very good scoring chances."

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF (and Faceoff Chain) were awarded to Paul Bednarz for getting of the schneid even if it was a goal on his own net.  That will prove to be the difference moving forward.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.36

This is the 88th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another sick article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.36.  Silver and Teal played their first of a home and home on Monday night at the War Memorial.  The season trend continued for Silver, as they handled Teal without too much trouble, winning by a final of 8 - 3.  Silver avoided falling for the huge trap game, but are sure to be tested in the second game of the series.

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF (and Faceoff Chain) were awarded to the Natty Daddy himself at a post-game celebration at Winner$.  This week, Hockey News! brings back the Ag Silver Spotlight to feature the second star of Monday's game, Griff Watson.  We are about to go on a journey back in time to when the University of Nebraska at Kearney Senior was coasting to graduation and winning awards like Sports Illustrated "Intern of the Week."  That is right, he is not just a fantastic backstop, he also is a mug for the camera and loves getting ink on a national stage for famous sports publications.

A three-year starter and two-year captain for University of Nebraska at Kearney's baseball team, Griff Watson had to give up his playing career after breaking his thumb in the spring of 2008.  The former catcher stayed connected to the game through a gig at the College World Series in his hometown of Omaha.

The toughest part of the job he said was "Working the autograph line.  We were doing autograph sessions with each team on Friday.  Each team was there for half an hour, then we would have to cut off the line.  LSU is always a big hit and their fans always travel.  I had to cut off some irate LSU fans, and got an earful for about 10 minutes even though I was letting their team leave to go get ready to play."

Griff also does not mind the hours, "For the opening ceremonies last Friday we were here from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and for the games we're here until the last game is over.  We pray for the pitcher's duel, but you rarely get that in the college game.  And then there's always good nightlife in Omaha during the Series, so I'm usually out after that."

Clearly, the lovely Erin Andrews has a special place in his heart.  He said, "I got my picture with Erin Andrews. It was one of the other intern's birthdays and I saw her on the field. I went up to her and said 'Erin, can you take a picture of my friend. It's his birthday.' Then I asked her to take one with me too."  What a sly dog!

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.35

This is the 87th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to a special rivalry-edition article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.35.  Silver and Gold met yet again for PRECIOUS METALS GAME 8 and let me tell you, it was a DOOZY.  Silver's struggles against their bitter rival this season have been well documented in Hockey News! articles, so it was to no surprise that Silver fell behind quickly 0 - 5.  The game pace did not slow at this point, nor did either team throw in the towel with each team adding a goal or two here and there, running the score up to 4 - 9 by the third period.

The odds stood long for Silver at this point, who had ever heard of a 5 goal, third period comeback against a Billy Wilson-less Gold?  This was the type of comeback that only a Gold roster from 8 years ago or the current Black roster could muster.  Even so, those are stories of legend and rumor, something you might hear in the Moylan Ice-Plex parking lot on a warm, moonlit Thursday night.  Rumor has it that Silver once surrendered a 9 - 1 lead, losing 10 - 11 to Gold.  You will not find that in the archives though, it only exists in the memories of the players.

Silver team was ready to rewrite the history books on this Monday night at the War Memorial.  After Silver got a goal or two back, Gold had not scored and frustrations built on the ice for one Rayleighn Alpert.  After a few cheap shots to many of the Silver players from the Gold player menace, Rayleighn, Zach Voss had had enough and the tilt was on.  A few seconds later, Voss had landed several haymakers and Alpert lay on the ice in disbelief and pain, leaking from his mouth and nose.  Both were ejected from the game and suspended from play on Thursday.

Silver, clearly jacked up from the Voss donnybrook, started getting pucks to the net and scoring at will.  Suddenly, the deficit was only a single goal.  The meltdown was purely golden and Silver smelled blood in the water (i.e., Alpert's blood from getting bitch-slapped in the melted ice).   Mullendore calmly walked into the slot and fired the equalizer past Slattery with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.  Both teams went into a defensive shell to finish the game, not wanting to give up the game winner.

The stage was set for the shootout, Silver on the cusp of a comeback for the ages and Gold on the brink of humiliating defeat that would likely send them into a spiral of shame from which it will take years to recover.  Blue pants super-try hard was up for Gold and missed the net!  Harris followed for Silver and easily slipped it underneath the blocker of Slattery.  Satan Needler then shot for Gold and barely found the back of the net, knotting the shootout at one apiece.  Silver and Gold's next shooters both were stopped, leaving one final shooter for Silver.  Parrone took the puck at center ice and casually cruised towards the crease.  There was a quiet and clear confidence about him, the entire arena could feel it emanating from his being.  After reaching the slot, Parrone gave a slight shake and fired the puck towards Slattery's five-hole.  The back of the net made a soft "thud," confirming for the Silver bench what they had been anticipating was now a reality, the game winning goal had been scored.

Post-game celebrations began in the dressing room with barley waters flowing from the heavens and a carnival-like atmosphere.  The jubilation even spilled out to the parking lot where the game winning goalie provided more refreshments, including chips, pretzels, peanut butter patties, and thin mints!  It certainly was a terrific end to a fairy-tale game.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.34

This is the 86th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to a rare DOUBLE article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.34.  Silver and Rusty Red were in action Monday night.  The new goalie, fresh off his shortened season with the Willmar Warhawks, was a major factor for Red, but Silver managed to hold on and win by a respectable score of 5 - 2.  Other Creighton guy #1 was not in the line up for Red and could not extend his league leading 49 goals.  The game was not without controversy however, when one of the kids without Creighton gear - which narrows it down considerably - got into a bit of a scrap with Silver star Jeff Harris.  Some pushing, shoving ,and a bit of punching led to minor penalties for both players.  The scuffle continued after the game in the handshake line after normally mild-mannered Chris Inserra instigated with Harris again, mentioning something about being DOCTOR HOOK and carving a man's eye out with a flick of the wrist.  No suspensions were issued by the league office.  Seeing that Inserra is actually a medical doctor, he may have just been trying to start a brawl to drum up some business.

The Thursday night game was between Silver and White, with Silver coming off four straight losses to White, they seemed to be due for a big win.  Thanks to great goaltending in the Silver net and a bad White team strength and conditioning program, Silver blanked the White team for the first shutout in BPHL history.  When asked about the performance, Martens spoke of the transcendent nature of the game, "This isn't just a big moment for the Silver team, it marks what was thought to be an unattainable achievement, not only in the BPHL, but in recreational adult hockey leagues everywhere."

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF were awarded to Zach Voss after the Red game.  He had at least a pair of goals - one coming on a 12-mile assist.  The pass from the Silver defensive zone was fired so hard it circled the rink at least a 160 times without being touched before Voss finally caught up to it in the Red slot and beat the new goalie to put the game on ice.  Aaron Martens took the honor for the White shutout.

This is the 85th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another bland article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.33.  Silver and White had a barn burner last week with the latter coming out on top, bagging the game winning goal with just around 90 seconds remaining in regulation.  This marks the fourth consecutive loss for Silver against White.  The game was certainly came as a blow to Silver, which was tied or leading for the majority of the game.  Silver has three more chances to get some revenge on the White team.

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF were left unawarded although there were some great performances on the ice from Silver, it did not seem like giving out awards would capture the spirit of the thing.
