Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.09

Twenty-eighth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another super sweet article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.9.  Silver lost another heart breaker to Black in the second game of the home and home by a score of 4 - 10.  Maybe if they had tried using the extra attacker for the entire third period, the result would have been different.

The equipment scratch saga came to an end - although it was close to continuing as only two small nuts were keeping the plastic steel holder in place on Robbie Barton's skate.  Christ Schneider's hip pointer again kept him out of the lineup, but Silver owner is confident it won't be for much longer.  One thing the entire team could agree on was that the aforementioned Schneider was certainly between the ages of 21 and 39.

As close as the game was in the box score (really close), the action on the ice made it seem even closer.  Due to some scheduling conflicts, Silver had to employ their emergency back-up goalie.  The net minder fared well against the potent offense of the Black team who have only registered two losses since joining the league last season.  Next article, we might even mention his name (if we learn it).

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.08

Twenty-seventh posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.8.  Black team squeaked out a win against Silver on Monday by the narrow score of 13 - 3.  It was very evident the reason for the loss fell squarely on the broad shoulders of the officiating crew, who missed several calls in favor of Black.  Chris Schneider was a notable unhealthy scratch due to a mishap in the shower two weeks ago.  One would think that injuries were more likely to happen on the ice, but one would be wrong.  Get well soon, Chris.

The equipment scratch saga continued Monday as Robbie B missed the third straight game.  There was some speculation in the Silver dressing room about the reasoning for the continued scratch, whether it be a monetary issue, an equipment availability issue, or a lack of understanding of basic economics.  When asked about the situation, New Mitch was quoted as saying, "I guess he doesn't understand the concept of 'sunk costs.' "  Barton and New Mitch's MicroEcon 101 professor were unavailable for comment on the matter.

The much anticipated return of Taylor Law did not disappoint as he netted two of the three Silver goals and won several draws, easily earning 3rd star of the game honors.  Silver probably would have certainly beat the spread had they not been stuck with only 8 skaters, missing Harris, #4, Korbel (who had permission from his wife) to name a few.  Mike Klingbeil was available to fill in, but no one called him.  Even this early in the season, it might be time for the owner to question the priorities of certain players.

Stars of the Game

1) John Hoggan
2) Kris Thompson
3) Taylor Law

Silver has second game of a home and home against Black on Thursday at RALSTON at 9:45 PM.  Despite the Monday outcome, this game will still be a battle of the top teams in the BPHL standings. I recommend anyone with a million bucks to spare throw it down on Black for an EASY $100.  Just make sure you capture the spirit of the thing when you get to the window.

Although Silver is the main team covered in these articles, it seemed worth mentioning that Teal got their first win of the season last night against the previously formidable Red team which is led by BPHL 2-time all-star goaltender (and All-Millennium Twins Fantasy Camp All-Star), Matthew Slattery (of Slattery Design).  That makes the win extra special.  Congratulations Teal!

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.07

Twenty-sixth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.7.  Silver team earned a blow-out victory against Teal last Monday by a score of 7-5.  There was a notable scratch from Silver team - but it wasn't the normal type (healthy, injury, etc.), it was an equipment scratch.  This was Robbie Barton's 2nd equipment scratch of the season.  More on that story as it develops.

The Silver team absolutely crushed Teal on Monday, handing them their 6th straight loss to open the season.  Meanwhile, Silver moves to 4-2 on the year.  News around the dressing room last week was that although owner Jim D will be missing Silver's next game as he volunteered to help build the wall on the Texas southern border, Taylor "Above the" Law will be making his season debut.  This will surely give Silver the boost they need to cover the spread and maybe, just maybe, hit the over on goals of 2.5 (Silver team only).

2) Crazy Legs
3) Mark Harral

These Lines STINK!

Just above the "winning" threshold percent this week - can't complain, but trust me, I will.  I've just thought of something maybe I should explain.  When I make the comment "On the field," it is referring to the team being an underdog and winning outright.... on the field.  Not sure if the faithful readers picked up on that, but I've used it essentially any time the underdog has won outright (which is about 45.71% of the time that I wager on them).  As I've mentioned before, probably should just start MONEYLINING THEM ALL.  The bank below is tracked throughout the season (based on a $110 bet on each game with -110 odds).

2019 Theoretical bank is currently UP $790 $11,130 + $110 + ($10,450).  (Net profit/loss = Winnings + money returned from pushes - total amount wagered).

Here's a summary of last week.

Purdue @ Northwestern -2  LOSS 24 - 22 (Margin +2)  Remind me again why I take favorites.

Stanford @ Colorado +3.5 WIN 13 - 16 (Margin -3)  On the field.

Wake Forest @ Va. Tech +2 WIN 17 - 36 (Margin -19)  On the field!

Illinios @ Michigan State -14.5 LOSS 37 - 34 (Margin +3)  This is the one to complain about.  The most ridiculous lines of the season have come for Sparty.  This was so horrible it had to be right - and it was for 3 quarters when Sparty was up 21 points.  Taking the loss ATS I can obviously understand if not expect, but to be on the losing end the biggest comeback in Illinois school history is just dumb.

Georgia State @ Louisiana Monroe +2.5 WIN 31 - 45 (Margin -14)  Another on the field victory.

BUF @ CLE -3 PUSH 16 - 19 (Margin -3)  First push of the season in week 10.

LAR @ PIT +3.5 WIN 12 - 17 (Margin -5)  What has happened to the LAR?

CAR +5 @ GB LOSS 16 - 24 (Margin +8)  Literally inches from covering this on the last play of the game.

KC -3.5 @ TEN LOSS 32 - 35 (Margin +3)  Chefs burn me two weeks in a row.

MIN +3 @ DAL WIN 28 - 24 (Margin -4)  So Dallas must be a mediocre team or the Vikes wouldn't be able to handle them in a "prime time" game.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.06

Twenty-fifth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.6.  Silver team earned a victory in a hard-fought game against Red last Monday.  The first meeting for the two teams this season finished 7-6.

The ice sheet was tilted one way all night with at least 11 goals being scored on one end.  Luckily for Silver, they played offense in that end two times.  It's hard to say what caused that phenomenon, whether it be the lighting, the net size, or the shoddy play of each team's defense.  We can be sure that both teams have made the proper adjustments after studying the film.  If either team comes out with goalies in sunglasses or larger pads or have much better players on their roster, we'll have the reason narrowed down.  After taking a somewhat sizable lead mid-way through the first, Silver quickly surrendered the lead in the second, before netting a late equalizer and game winning goal in the third on a nifty play from the game's number one star.

There was a scary moment for Silver when veteran defenseman/forward/centerman/floater Dustin "Big Show" Gangelhoff fell awkwardly into the boards.  Although he didn't miss any shifts, he is considered day-to-day with an upper body injury.

I'm Not Gonna Lie, There Have Been Some Reversals

The NCAA decided to put me back in my place last week  The bank below is tracked throughout the season (based on a $110 bet on each game with -110 odds).

2019 Theoretical bank is currently UP $730 $10,080 + $0 + ($9,350).  (Net profit/loss = Winnings + money returned from pushes - total amount wagered).

Here's a summary of last week.

Akron +6 @ Bowling Green  LOSS 6 - 35 (Margin +29)  Zips really stunk this one up.

Mississippi State @ Arkansas +7.5 LOSS 54 - 24 (Margin +30)  Just destroying the point diff this week.

UNLV @ Colorado State +7.5 WIN 17 - 37 (Margin -20)  On the field!

Marshall @ Rice +11.5 LOSS 20 - 7 (Margin +13)  Close loss.

Pittsburgh @ Georgia Tech +8 LOSS 20 - 10 (Margin +10)  Another close loss.

TEN +3.5 @ CAR LOSS 20 - 30 (Margin +10)  Needed that backdoor TD cover.

NYJ @ MIA +3 WIN 18 - 26 (Margin -8)  Fish with first win ON THE FIELD.

GB @ LAC +3.5 WIN 11 - 26 (Margin -15)  Kind of a stinker and everyone on the Pack.  Chargers ON THE FIELD.

KC @ MIN +2.5 LOSS 23 - 26 (Margin +3)  Such a poorly executed offensive game for the Vikings who ended up being favored by 5 once Mahomes was ruled out.  Loser either way.

NE @ BAL +3 WIN 20 - 37 (Margin -17)  This was a bit fishy also.  Hard to bet against Brady and the Pats, but if you don't trust your own system, where does that put you? This week it would have been in the LOSS column.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.05

Twenty-fourth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.5.  Silver team came back down to earth on Thursday as it dropped the second of the Home and Home against Gold by a score of 3 - 12.  Notable scratches were #4 and Schneider.  Billy Wilson, the regular starting net minder for Gold, was curiously absent in the victory for Gold.  Mat Slattery of Slattery Design stepped in to earn the win for Gold.  When asked about the missing goal tender, a Gold spokesman said that he was "out sick with the Silver flu.....errr I mean flu."

Vegas odds for the game were altered drastically upon hearing of the late scratch, moving the Gold and Silver money lines to -10,000 and +6,780, the puck line to -9.5, and the total to 14.5.  Anyone who got in on Silver +7.5 and the over will be extremely disappointed.

The drama from Monday's game seemed to blow over as none of the young bucks from Gold antics surfaced on Thursday.  It would seem that they received the message loud and clear from the veteran Silver team.  One Silver team member did go down hard but as far as this reporter can tell, it wasn't due to a cheap shot from Gold.  Although there was no gun shot heard, a sniper hit Robbie Barton during one of Gold's offensive rushes, taking him clear off his skates and onto his back.  Luckily, the shot did not pierce any vital organs (or the skin itself).

Since there was nothing much to note last game, we have continued the stars of the game from Silver's Monday victory.

Stars of the Game (continued)
1) Jeff Evans (part of the 3 goal barrage to start the game)
2) #4
3) Paul and Harris

Silver has the toughest match up of the season (evidently) tonight at RALSTON at 8:45 PM.  Red is currently leading the BPHL standings due to their undefeated record and the fact that their goalie runs the league, stats, and website (probably).

Heating Up!

After a banner week 8 I need to take a step back and reflect.  Let's keep it humble here.  I feel like I should be money lining on all the underdogs, now hitting at a 42.59% winning clip.  If the average money line is +150, then a 40% winning clip will break even.  Currently it would be an additional $350 with $100 money line bets (23 of 54) for this season using those odds.  Just something to think about!  The bank below is tracked throughout the season (based on a $110 bet on each game with -110 odds).

2019 Theoretical bank is currently UP $990 $9,240 + $0 + ($8,250).  (Net profit/loss = Winnings + money returned from pushes - total amount wagered).

Here's a summary of last week.

Ohio +2.5 @ Ball State  WIN 34 - 21 (Margin -13)  On the field!

Virginia @ Louisville +3.5 WIN 21 - 28 (Margin -7)  On the field.

Texas @ TCU +1.5 WIN 27 - 37 (Margin -10)  On the field?

Penn State @ Michigan State +5.5 LOSS 28 - 7 (Margin +21)  This was the most ridiculous line of the year.  Sparty had to be right side - otherwise why on earth put yourself at the risk of every dope in America crushing the Penn State side (line still went down to 4 before kick-off).

South Carolina @ Tennessee +4.5 WIN 21 - 41 (Margin -20)  On the field.

WAS @ MIN -16 LOSS 9 - 19 (Margin -10)  I hate having to pick games with these kind of spreads.

DEN +5.5 @ IND WIN 13 - 15 (Margin +2)  Should have won outright.
