Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.14

This is the 66th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another recounted article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.14.  Silver was trounced in last Monday's precious metals game - if you can really call it a game.  Gold scored early and often to win easily by a score of 9 - 3.  This drops Silver's record in the season series to 0-2-1.  Game four of the series is set for 7 December - which happens to be the date Silver will be unveiling a whole new attitude.  Aside from getting the power play together, their bus will be decorated to look mean, they will be "putting on the foil," and "Lady of Spain" will no longer be allowed to be played over the loud speakers at the arena.

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF were again not awarded.  The Ag Player Silver Spotlight was not submitted to the editor in time to make post due to the turkey, stuffing, and lefse consumption of the writing staff during the break.  The Hockey News! staff wishes everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving!

Hopefully you spent the holiday with the ones you care about, as the above most certainly did.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.13

This is the 65th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another recounted article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.13.  Silver dropped a tough one to Red last Thursday, falling 4 - 5.  The Black Knight was in rare form in net for Red and was able to win the game almost single-handed.  Silver had many, many, many chances which is a testament to how well the Black Knight was playing - easily earning the number one star honors.  That's all there is to say about that.

Do you know what nemesis means?

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF were not awarded since there was not a worthy recipient.  The Ag Player Silver Spotlight features a long-time veteran and also the new equipment manager, Jeff Evans.  Now, Jeff was not always at the lofty rank of equipment manager.  He, like all success stories, had to work his way up to that position.  Similarly, in his other career, Evans started as the costume guy flipping a sign outside Pizza West.  Now, he is the boss and even signs the owner's checks.

I have two mushroom heads.

The wily veteran has honed his skills in many other areas during his time with Silver - not necessarily on the ice, but they are related as "adjacent" activities.  One of those is winning at the crane game.   Winner$, the local watering hole outside the rink has a crane game and it is pretty obvious that Evans decided to practice craning whenever he had the chance so he could win his teammates over with wonderful crane game toys.  It has worked like gangbusters.  The other skill that was developed was drinking 36 oz beers and throating double barrel hot dogs - we all know how being a professional in those areas can improve the quality of our lives.  Clearly it makes you a ladies man as evidenced by the next photograph - you sly dog you.

Blond or brunette - I ain't choosy!

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.12

This is the 64th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another recounted article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.12.  Silver put the screws to Red on Monday night, winning by a score of 8 - 3.  Bednarz and Mullendore got Silver going quickly and Silver never looked back despite having five key roster pieces missing in Harris, #4, Schneider, Voss, and DeRouchey.  Luckily, Silver is in mid-season conditioning form and easily skated through the increase in ice time.  Griffith Watson was stellar again between the pipes, putting together back-to-back wins, moving Silver's record to 4-3-2 (10 points).

Jake Mullendore - at least 4 G, at least 1 dirty dangle, 16:23 TOI

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF were officially awarded to Jake Mullendore for another stellar performance which included a sick shorthanded goal.  Unfortunately, he was unavailable for a post-game comment or photo opp.  The Ag Player Silver Spotlight features another younger player, now in his second season with the superior precious metal team - Alex "Coop" Cooper.  This young man had a very trying rookie season, what with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, I guess that's more than most 24-year-olds can handle.

The many faces of Coop

Coop entered into his last phase of all hockey players' careers - beer league - after his senior season at Midland University (2017-18).  What he lacks in stature, he makes up for with intensity and a feisty attitude that has led to a game ejection already this season.  It likely will not be his last ejection of the season - you just cannot quell that kind of fire.  Coop added a goal in Silver's Monday victory as well - taking a feed in the slot and burying it like a dog's favorite bone.

Player/coach Jim DeRouchey stated in an interview before leaving for an important business trip (reason for missing the tilt), "The Ag Player Silver Spotlight player is now officially responsible for bringing refreshments to the next game."  The rest of the Silver roster will be hoping Coop got an early Christmas bonus from Scheels in order to afford a nice 30-rack of Busch Lattes.

He is well-liked by all his teammates as well.  A story was told of him throwing his body in harms way in order to save a vehicle from being stolen from a Silver player last season.  You can't teach that kind of true-silver loyalty.  The would-be thief was likely hired by a Gold team member.  They seem to always be up to dirty games.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.11

This is the 63rd posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another FREAKY FRIDAY the 13th article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.11.  Silver and Gold battled for the second time in the 2020 PRECIOUS METALS series on Thursday night at Ralston Arena.  There were no tickets available just prior to game time.  Silver held an early 1 - 0 lead before surrendering two quick goals.  Silver tied the game again at 2 before Gold again took the lead.  Silver tied the game at least two more times before finally falling 8 - 9 late in the third.

Notable healthy scratches #4 and Voss certainly could have turned the tide for Silver although it wasn't as if the superior precious metal didn't have plenty of great chances.  BPHL league president (who conveniently found himself on the first place team for 2020 - see the story of how it may have happened here), Matthew Slattery of Slattery Design ©, turned aside one too many of those opportunities, depriving Silver of the chance at a shootout victory.

Paul "Hard Shot" Bednarz - 2 G, 0 A, 12 SOG, 1 shot of sambuca, 1 angry pregnant wife

The PLARSHMT & OBMASLF were officially awarded to the player with the hardest shot on Silver.  Bednarz had been snake bitten in the early stages of the season, finding it extremely difficult to get on the score sheet.  He now has three goals in the last two games - nothing like facing the league president to get him off the schneid.

The next Ag Player Silver Spotlight will be in the next article.  The Hockey News! i-team is currently out digging up new information.  One of the sources was supposed to supply some good material so that this writer could spin it into a silver story (not gold), but the source has not delivered before the Friday Happy Hour deadline.  So we'll all be laying in wait for what is sure to be a juicy one.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.10

This is the 62nd posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another fraud-free and VETERAN-SPONSORED article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.10.  Let Hockey News take a moment to honor and salute the great veterans of the US armed forces that are serving and have served this great nation - THANK YOU for protecting our right to write about important topics such as BPHL hockey!

Silver took their overconfidence against Black to heart during their extended days off before Monday's tilt with Teal (which was in second place prior to puck drop in the BPHL standings).  Oddly enough, Teal had only one loss on the season which was also their first game against Silver.  Game one of the series wasn't particularly a well-played game from Silver but they ended up winning fairly easily on the score sheet by a margin of 8 - 4.  The second contest ended with the same result (a Silver victory) but was achieved on a different path.  Silver was also spurred on by their new socks and Ag bag-tags that were given out prior to the game, providing a very much appreciated boost to team morale.

Although Teal recorded the first tally of the game, it never seemed like they had much momentum.  Silver had many chances to get the puck to the net but ended up making a few too many extra moves and failed to record several shots.  The goals came by way of working hard, getting pucks deep, getting pucks to the net - which ultimately results in winning some hockey games.  Silver wasn't afraid to get it out, effectively clearing their own zone, getting the puck high and hard off the glass.  Silver was willing to go into the dirty areas and came out clean on the other side, winning 4 - 1.  They also got "the power play together," as suggested by a commentator on the blog site, converting on their lone opportunity.

Griffith Watson - 1 GA, 52 SV

The Prestigious LA Ross Silver Helmet Memorial Trophy and the Obscure Bryan "Mario" Alexander Silver Lancers Fedora (or PLARSHMT & OBMASLF) were officially awarded to Griffith Watson.  The star of the game award was clearly well deserved as Silver's net minder allowed a career-low one goal.  The one goal allowed also likely tied a record or set a record for the lowest total ever in a real BPHL game.  This article's Ag Player Silver Spotlight features a veteran of the Silver roster that is no stranger to the PLARSHMT & OBMASLF award, Jeff Harris.

He's a looker!

Harris is well-known in the hockey community for his skills and tendency to fill up the score sheet.  This isn't his first player profile and likely won't be his last.  Just a few short years ago, in 2013, Harris was named the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week for his performance in two big wins for the St. Olaf Oles against bitter rival St. Thomas Tommies.  Harris netted four goals on the road in a hostile environment, adding to his conference-lead in points and goals while pushing his team to the top of the standings over the very same Tommies.  Later he won player of the YEAR!

Barbwire tattoo goes all the way around.

What you may not know about Harris is that he is also the front man of his very own self-titled country band.  Check out his album Angels and Scars available on apple music (probably).

Silver is back in action Thursday, 12 November at RALSTON Arena at 8:30 PM.  This will be the second edition of the PRECIOUS METALS game for the 2020 season.  Gold won in a shootout during round one of the series despite A-A-Ron Martens turning aside at least eight Gold shootout shots.  The outcome may be different this time around since Gold hasn't played Silver in their new sweaters - which clearly support the dominance of the true superior metal.  Come on down to the Ralston Arena, bring the kids!  We've got entertainment for the whole family.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.09

This is the 61st posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another litigated article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.09.  Silver clearly came into the recent game against Black riding high with confidence after their crushing defeat of the Phantoms in the previous contest.  As it turns out, it was supreme OVERconfidence and a Hoggan-less Black easily defeated Silver despite only having five skaters for the entire game (and one of them was Vader).  They brought Silver back down to earth, scoring early and often while cruising to an easy 11 - 4 victory.

The loss put a severe damper on the debut of Silver's SHARP, new sweaters.  Chris "I don't play late games" Schneider also made his debut for the 2020 season after starting the first five games on the PUP-FCP list (physically unable to perform by female counter part list).  More on that story as it develops.

The game also marked the last for Blake Koster in a Silver uniform for the foreseeable future as his trade deal papers were finalized.  The team celebrated his dedication and hard work throughout the seasons with a few post-game barley pops at Winner$.  See you around Ba-la-key!

The Prestigious LA Ross Silver Helmet Memorial Trophy and the Obscure Bryan "Mario" Alexander Silver Lancers Fedora were unofficially awarded to Blake Koster as a lifetime achievement award to honor his time on Silver.  Congrats Blake and good luck with what is next!  The Ag Player Silver Spotlight features one of the newer members to the Silver roster - Matthew Blaszkiewicz - or as he is known around the dressing room, "The Natty Daddy Closer."

The Natty Daddy Closer

"I'm from Chicago - ever heard of it?"

Playing in his sophomore season for Silver, the Closer has come into his own, contributing to many nearly scored goals.  Likely leading the team in "third assists," Blasz needs no assistance in the post-game celebration department, regardless of his residence being several zip codes away.  If you let him, he'll talk about White Sox baseball players the current GM hasn't even heard of yet and curiously came down with an injury when the Chicago Bears were on Monday Night Football - a direct conflict with game time.

That's right, we match the ladies, not a big deal.

The above photograph is a fantastic display of the Closer's dedication to Easter fashion during a prom at Hometown, IL.  It is unclear whether the girl couldn't find a date and had to result to inviting an 8th grader or if the baby-faced senior Blasz is holding a gun to his date's back to make sure she accompanies him - either are extremely plausible.  Maybe he was just afraid to touch her while standing up and facing forward.  Perhaps some questions for the post-game interview tonight.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 3.08

This is the 60th posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to the second HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 3.08.  Silver absolutely crushed the Phantoms last Thursday with multiple players pouring in at least 36 oz of pucks per man.  The total was shattered and some of Silver's players were getting slightly wobbly on the skates.  There wasn't much to the game and Silver may have been looking past the Phantoms to their next league game.  Silver will hopefully learn their lesson from that mistake, which left several players nursing hangovers after the excessive celebration from the victory.

Make sure to log on for an extra special Ag Player Silver Spotlight which is going to be a doozy.
