Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.32

This is the fifty-first posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stunning article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.32.  This weeks article is a DOOZY man, it really is.  Silver battled Gold once again in this season's 7th edition of the PRECIOUS METALS GAME.  Things were back and forth early on, but Silver pulled ahead for good.  That was about the time that Gold showed the true colors of their hearts - black.

That's right, their playing style became as dark as their BLACK AS NIGHT hearts.  Seeing the writing on the wall (that Silver was, always has been, and ALWAYS WILL BE the superior precious metal), the Gold players started systematically taking cheap shots at Silver.  It started with a body check behind the net that sent Roland Alfork to the box.  Shortly after that, Gold took many more penalties but none that were as bad as the blind-sided shoulder to the face of Alex "Coop" Cooper by ISIS arm of the Gold team, Satan "ALI ALI AKBAR DERKA DERKA JIHAD" Needler.  Coop defended himself immediately, as he should and was helped out by Chris "I don't play late games" Schneider.

Even the generally soft-spoken player/coach Jimmy DeRouchey of Silver gave him an earful that would have likely warranted a PG-13 rating by the MPAA.  Unfortunately, Satan couldn't understand a word as he only speaks Derka-incest gibberish.

There was also an ejection of Anders Wang after goaltender A-A-Ron Martens gave him some retribution for hacking veteran Silver D-man, Robbie Barton.  The BPHL head official may have been getting some revenge for Wang's blatant crosscheck on him earlier this season.

Gold continued to attack Silver players by blatantly tripping a streaking Schneider on a breakaway letting him collide at full speed with the end boards, taking a toll on his upper body.  Blake Koster got tangled in front of the net by a dirty Gold player and ended up tearing all the ligaments in his knee.  Funnily enough, Mark Hasebroock did NOT offer to pay for the surgery or other medical bills, but he did buy Runza and ice creams for the Gold team to stop them from whining about losing.

Later, Jason Strakholm chased down New Mitch after being stripped of the puck.  He proceeded to climb his back and rake him over with a sharpened pitchfork, and finally wrestle him to the ice. Both players were awarded minor penalties, which was fair (at least in the eyes of the league office).  In the end, Silver won, the over hit, and the score is likely being contested by Gold since it hasn't been posted on the official league page as of the posting time of this article.

Silver may never be back in action due to the irrational and panicked behavior of a small minority of idiots in this country, which includes RALSTON ARENA. Hopefully the decision makers come to their senses soon and hockey will be back in all our lives.  If anyone suffers, it'll be the fans and they are the reason they play the game.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.31

This is the fiftieth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to a bi-weekly article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.31.  Silver overcame an early deficit to remain undefeated against Teal last night, winning by a score of 4 - 2.  Goal scorers were New Mitch, Adam Collette, and two other players (probably #4 and maybe Jake M, Matt B, Blake K, Jim D, but definitely NOT Kyle K, Chris S, Nate K, Taylor L, Reid J, Alex C, or AARon M).

Silver was peppering stand-in goalie Matthew Slattery (of Slattery Design, Inc. LLC Corp.) all night - it would be hard to tell without the official stat sheet in front of me, but one would guess he saw at least 75 shots, what a dynamo!  Teal had a number of "stand-in" players that were approved by the league office despite being against the league by-laws.  Lucky for Silver, they don't let those things affect them on the ice - they are always ready to play.

The focus has shifted to playoff seeding with Silver just two points back from White, the final games have become that much more crucial.  They will be the difference in a first round game against Teal or a first round game against bitter rival, Red.  You don't have to be Herbert Alstone to know that's a big deal.  White will likely get at least three wins in the final six games.  That means Silver has to get four wins or three wins and a shootout loss in order to take over third place, but they only have five games to do it.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.30

This is the forty-ninth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to an extra special article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.30.  This season's 30th article is a doozy let me tell you.  Silver and Black did battle on the ice in the BPHL night cap that routinely features the best teams in the league - mostly due to the west coast television market.  The fan that watched was not disappointed.

Both teams were very evenly matched, as they have been all season - but Black had the edge on the scoreboard early, skating to a 5 - 2 lead after one period.  Silver team must have had a rousing speech in the dressing room from vocal leader Mitch Staiger (known to most simply as "4") because there was a different team on the ice for the rest of the game.  Silver ground out a few more goals to eventually post the tying goal in the third.

Shortly after this moment, tempers flared and a real brouhaha broke out on the ice.  Following a bit of stick work, one of the Black players turned to shoot the puck into his own end for what was likely just a bit of defensive zone and breakout practice drills - which coincidentally hit one of the Silver players.  All was calming down until the league ultra tough  guy and well known bad ass, Grant Gallo, decided to two-hand chop the player that was hit with the puck and start running his mouth with all 190 lbs behind it.  Eventually he turtled and went back to playing the soft hockey with chop-work and was secretly thankful no one would bother fighting him because they have to go to work the next day.  Once he realized his UNO career was about as impressive as working part-time at Wal-Mart, play resumed with a heightened level of awareness.

Black managed to break the tie with only a couple minutes left in regulation and it seemed to be lights out for Silver, but then Paul Bednarz stepped past the blue line, received a pass and rocketed a high hard one under the glove-side bar to knot it back up.  It was heading to a shootout until league ultra tough guy and well known bad ass fired one into the back of Silver's net with 3.8 seconds remaining.  What a way to go.  Griffith Watson took home the traveling trophy - he saw so much rubber he was starting to turn into a puck.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vols: 2.28 and 2.29.  Silver lost tight ones to White team in back to back games by scores of 5 - 7 and 0 - 8.  The effort was there, but other things were lacking.

The Silver team affiliate also fared poorly out in a Las Vegas tournament going 0 - 3, but the team showed some promise against stiff competition and is already looking to start an off season training program for 2021.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.27

This is the forty-sixth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.27.  Silver lost a close game to Red last Thursday by a final of 4 - 5 (despite the official score showing 3 - 5).  The head official denied another goal for Silver, making it the 47th disallowed goal for Silver team this season.  It's quite remarkable the number has reached that high, but despite the bad luck, Silver team forges on, once again into the breach.

The game was fairly late, so maybe the officials were a bit tired and thus were having trouble seeing through their eyelids.  Nevertheless this brings up another point that will take some serious discussion in the off-season summer meetings.  Silver team has on the schedule a whopping 15 of 36 games scheduled at 9:45 PM or later, not to mention 13 games starting within the 8 o'clock hour.  While there are only games starting within the 7 o'clock hour on all Mondays and two Thursdays (a total of 25 games), each team would fairly get 8 of those games, which Silver does have.  The discrepancy comes during the 8 PM versus the LATE games, where Silver clearly has one too many of the latter.  This conspiracy will be brought to to the attention of the commissioner for immediate answers.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.26

This is the forty-fifth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.26.  Silver was brought back down to earth after riding high winning four of the last five games including the impressive victory against the Phantoms this past Monday.  Silver may have had a bit of bad luck but in the end, the offense wasn't firing on all cylinders.  Silver career and season scoring leader Jeff Harris (day-to-day LBI) tried to give it a go on the ice, but had to leave shortly after the start of the second period.  Silver may have to consider keeping him on the shelf until the start of the playoff run for one.  More on that story as it develops.

White team forfeited the late game against Black so the opponents of the prior game assembled as a team to take them on in an exhibition.  There were 25 total goals score (26 actually if you count the disallowed goal of the stick of Paul Bednarz).  It's too bad Korbel couldn't have been there, wearing his Red/Silver jersey which would have fit right in, color blind or not.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.25.  Silver buried the Phantoms by a lot.  It got ugly quickly.

There wasn't much noteworthy items to observe in the Silver/Phantoms game so we'll preview tonight's game against the much hated Red team.  Precious Metals player of the game, Paul Bednarz vowed a repeat performance against his arch-nemesis and net-minder for Red, Matthew Slattery of Slattery Design.  That might be hard to muster (not the assists total - that's a given), but 4 or more goals?  The Ralston Arena crowd is in for a treat if he can pull it off.  Bring your extra hats.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.24.  Silver lost a tight one to Gold last Monday night by a score of 7 - 9.  The loss moved Gold back into second place in the standings while Silver dropped to third.  Despite the loss, Silver was in high spirits after the game, celebrating with a cooler full of the best lake beers in the universe, maybe even the world..

Ultimately, dozen egg night was a non-factor since there were zero fans in attendance for the game.  Rumor has it that Gold used fan intimidation tactics at the arena entrance in order to scare off all the Silver support, knowing that nobody would be showing up in support of the Gold team.  Clearly this was a key to the victory and not being covered in egg.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another stupendous article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.23.  Silver edged out White by a final of 7 - 5 on Thursday night.  Silver held the advantage the entire game, never trailing in the contest.  It was one of the better games played by both teams, with action going back and forth for all 36 minutes.  In the end, Silver's stellar team defense and excellent conversion of scoring chances (for those not named Blaszkiewicz) made the difference.  Evan Anderson took home the Prestigious LA Ross Silver Helmet Memorial Trophy with a great performance from the blue line, including a Gordie Howe Hattrick.

The game's sponsors were Pizza West and Coors Light, which delivered a delicious large pizza and beer to the winning team's dressing room immediately following the game.  Not there for the winning celebration was team points leader Jeff Harris, who left the game at the start of the third period due to a lower body injury.  The x-rays and MRI were inconclusive and he's considered day-to-day.  The injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Silver with a big game looming next week and playoffs just around the corner.  Here's wishing Mr. Harris a speedy recovery with the help of a little drug cocktail from the league-sponsored pharmacy, Medicine Man.

Silver is slated for another edition of the PRECIOUS METALS game next MONDAY at RALSTON at 8:45 PM.  Silver has moved ahead of Gold in the standings and sits in second place, for now.  It might be as close as they can get with Gold only having one more game against Black for the rest of the regular season (currently 1 - 7 dropping the last 7). Silver only has two remaining games with Gold so the help is going to have to come from Teal and Red if Silver wants to hold on to that second seed.  Remember, Monday night is Dozen Egg night, so bring your friends.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.22

This is the forty-first posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another repetitive article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.22.  Silver ended Teal's hopes of getting their second big win in a row on Monday night, really taking Teal to the woodshed, triumphing by a score of 13-4 (or something like that).  The final score didn't matter much because Silver covered the spread by at least double and the over hit in the first period.  Once the game was a mere formality, it was only a matter of who would take home the Prestigious LA Ross Silver Helmet Memorial Trophy.

Matt Blaszkiewicz - 2 goals (bar down) and probably multiple assists, shots, hits, with a +7 rating

On a lighter note, Bryan "Mario" Alexander, known for his wild slap shots and even wilder mustache, must have pulled out his plumber skills, bouncing pucks form the corners off players and sticks into the net, scoring 2 goals in a matter of 7 seconds.  Aside from letting his own team score on him, Griff Watson was stellar in net, making sure the emergency back-up goalie won't encroach on his status in net for Silver.

Update: A-A-Ron Martens is still recovering from the Coronavirus, which may have been misdiagnosed initially.  It turns out it was actually a cold (sore throat, cough).  He went out last week in a storm to start his car and didn't have his jacket on.  The ailment has likely settled down into his kidneys.  His status remains day-to-day for Silver's next game.

This is the fortieth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another regular article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.21.  Silver and Red matched up last Thursday and the normally competitive game that we've come to expect was nowhere to be seen.  Silver scored early and often in the eventual rout of Red, winning by a final of 9 - 3.  Everything was coming up Silver whether it be goal scoring, defense, or goal tending.

Likely a large contributing factor to the Silver win was the depth on the bench which allowed for three full, potent lines of forwards.  A-A-Ron Martens was an unhealthy scratch, coming down with the Coronavirus earlier in the week.  This led to a call-up of the emergency back-up goalie, who came in on extremely short notice and shined brightly between the pipes, saving several shots with his head.  This unexpected performance easily earned the Silver backstop star of the game honors and the new traveling trophy (The Prestigious LA Ross Silver Helmet Memorial Trophy).

Update to a previous story line, New Mitch was actually hit with a one-game suspension and hence was missing from the line up against Red.  He will likely be back on the ice tonight, unless head coach Jim DeRouchey is looking to send a message to the rest of the club and the league about how to play old-time hockey.

Hockey News! Special Edition Vol: 2.20

This is the thirty-ninth posting of the news articles from the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League written by the beat writer that covers the league.  He calls himself Dickie Dunn - his true identity is unknown.

Greetings hockey fans and welcome to another mediocre article of Hockey News BPHL: Special Edition Vol: 2.20.  Silver gave Black their biggest challenge of the season since their first game loss to Gold.  Silver jumped out to a sizable lead before Jeff "Iron Man" Hoggan took the game into his own hands, putting his team on his back and carrying them to victory.  A few items of note, 9 goals is the lowest offensive output for Black with the exception of playing against a Billy Wilson-less Gold team.  The 7 goals allowed is also a season high for Black, except for those two games where Red was credited with 8 goals (likely a Slattery input "error").

In other BPHL news, Red beat Gold in a shootout thanks to a superb effort of the subs from Silver - so in a way, Silver went .500 on the night.

In other Silver team news, the whole new attitude of one particular player has captured the attention of the entire league, especially the officials. Amidst piling up a whole new rash of penalty minutes in just the last couple games, some people are asking, is he just a bully?  His reputation is one that scares the bejesus outta everybody.  This young man has had a very trying sophomore season, what with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada, and that country's refusal to accept him. Well, that's more than most 29 year-olds could handle.  Yes of course we are talking about New Mitch.  The news is out that Mark Marta put a personal bounty on New Mitch's head for tonight's game.  That's $100 of his own money for the first guy that takes New Mitch out of the game.  Marta may be disappointed to realize that New Mitch only plays on Mondays. Mark your calendars for February 17th.

Silver is back in action against RED tonight at RALSTON at 8:30 PM.  These teams are as evenly matched as they come in the BPHL.  It's anyone's game out on the ice tonight.  It will likely come down to a couple key missed calls by the league's head official - who has forgotten his glasses for the entire season so far.
